The Phinisi Broker Evaluation Methodology
Recommending a luxury phinisi is a profound responsibility. It’s an endorsement of safety, quality, and service that directly impacts our clients’ precious time and investment. That’s why we developed a proprietary, multi-faceted methodology to evaluate every vessel before it can be considered for the Phinisi Broker portfolio. This rigorous, data-driven approach ensures that our recommendations are trustworthy, consistent, and based on objective criteria, not just beautiful photographs.
Our methodology is a living framework, continuously refined by our expert team. It is the practical application of our Editorial Standards and our commitment to excellence in the phinisi broker industry.
The Phinisi Broker Score™: A 100-Point Audit
Every vessel undergoes a comprehensive audit scored out of 100 points, broken down into five critical categories. A phinisi must achieve a minimum score of 85 to be accepted into our curated collection and must maintain this score during annual re-evaluations.
1. Vessel Quality & Maintenance (30 Points)
This category assesses the physical asset itself. We look beyond the surface to evaluate the vessel’s structural integrity, engineering, and the quality of its onboard systems.
- Build & Heritage (5 pts): Quality of ironwood/teak construction, builder’s reputation (e.g., Konjo artisans from Tana Beru), and overall design aesthetic.
- Engineering & Systems (10 pts): Main engine and generator brands, age, and service records. Watermaker capacity, electrical systems, and navigation equipment (radar, GPS, AIS).
- Accommodations & Amenities (10 pts): Cabin size and layout, quality of linens and toiletries, en-suite bathroom condition, air conditioning effectiveness, and public space design (lounge, dining areas, deck space).
- Maintenance & Cleanliness (5 pts): Impeccable cleanliness, recent refit records, condition of paint and varnish, and overall state of repair.
2. Crew & Service Excellence (30 Points)
The crew is the heart of any charter. We evaluate their professionalism, expertise, and their ability to deliver intuitive, five-star hospitality.
- Captain & Officers (10 pts): Captain’s license level (e.g., ANT I/II/III), years of experience in the specific cruising area (Komodo, Raja Ampat), and demonstrable leadership skills.
- Hospitality Crew (10 pts): Cruise Director’s experience, crew-to-guest ratio, formal hospitality training, language skills, and service etiquette.
- Culinary Program (5 pts): Chef’s background and training, menu quality and variety, ability to cater to complex dietary needs, and galley hygiene standards.
- Specialist Guides (5 pts): Dive Master’s certification (PADI/SSI Instructor level preferred), knowledge of marine life, and safety protocols. Expertise of any other onboard guides (e.g., yoga instructors, cultural experts).
3. Safety & Compliance (20 Points)
Non-negotiable and paramount. This section is a strict pass/fail on many items. We verify compliance with both Indonesian and international maritime standards.
- Regulatory Compliance (10 pts): Valid certificates for all required Indonesian permits (see our Safety & Compliance page for details), and adherence to park regulations.
- Safety Equipment (5 pts): SOLAS-grade life rafts, EPIRB, satellite phone, comprehensive first-aid and medical oxygen kits, and fire suppression systems.
- Emergency Protocols (5 pts): Documented emergency action plans, regular crew safety drills, and clear guest safety briefings.
4. Itinerary & Experience Delivery (10 Points)
This assesses the vessel’s ability to deliver the ‘wow’ factor and create a seamless, enriching journey.
- Tenders & Water Toys (5 pts): Quality and number of tenders, kayaks, paddleboards, and other equipment. Condition of dive and snorkel gear.
- Itinerary Customization (5 pts): Flexibility of the crew and vessel to adapt to guest preferences, weather changes, and unique opportunities.
5. Sustainability & Local Impact (10 Points)
We champion vessels that share our commitment to preserving Indonesia’s natural beauty. See our Sustainability page for more.
- Environmental Practices (5 pts): Advanced wastewater treatment, robust waste management and recycling programs, and strict single-use plastic reduction policies.
- Community Engagement (5 pts): Sourcing produce from local markets, hiring crew from local communities, and respectful engagement with villages visited.
The Audit Process
Evaluation is a continuous cycle, not a one-time event.
- Initial Application: Owners submit a detailed application with full vessel specifications and legal documentation.
- Documentation Audit: Our team verifies all submitted paperwork with the relevant issuing authorities.
- Onboard Inspection: A minimum 2-day, 1-night inspection is conducted by at least two members of our senior team, including one from operations. This is where the Phinisi Broker Score™ is determined.
- Annual Re-evaluation: Every vessel in our portfolio is re-inspected annually to ensure standards are maintained and to update our records.

Beyond the blueprint: Deconstructing luxury phinisi design and amenities
Our evaluation delves far deeper than glossy brochures, scrutinizing the very DNA of each vessel’s design. We assess how traditional Bugis or Makassarese shipbuilding heritage, recognized by UNESCO in 2017 for its intangible cultural significance, seamlessly
