Phinisi Broker

Sustainability & Community Impact

The majesty of Indonesia lies in its pristine seas, vibrant cultures, and unparalleled biodiversity. At Phinisi Broker, we believe we have a profound responsibility to protect these treasures for generations to come. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it is a core pillar of our business model and a key criterion in Our Methodology for selecting partner vessels. Our commitment extends beyond simple ‘greenwashing’ to encompass tangible actions that support environmental conservation and empower local communities.

Our Environmental Commitment: Preserving Paradise

We are dedicated to minimizing the ecological footprint of our operations and the journeys we create. Our strategy focuses on measurable impact and proactive conservation.

1% for the Indonesian Seas

We pledge to donate 1% of our annual profits to our handpicked marine conservation partners in Indonesia. This provides direct financial support to organizations like The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Indonesia and the Manta Trust, funding critical research, reef protection, and community-based conservation projects in the areas our clients visit, such as Komodo and Raja Ampat.

Carbon-Conscious Travel

We acknowledge that travel has a carbon footprint. To mitigate this, we have partnered with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Kalimantan, a world-leading REDD+ project. For every charter booked, we calculate the estimated carbon emissions from the clients’ domestic flights within Indonesia and purchase verified carbon credits to offset this impact.

Strict Onboard Environmental Policies

We require every phinisi in our portfolio to adhere to our strict environmental standards:

Our Community Commitment: Empowering People

Sustainable tourism must benefit the local people who are the stewards of their environment and culture. Our goal is to create a positive economic and social ripple effect in the communities we touch.

Championing Local Employment

We have a firm policy to partner with phinisis that maintain a minimum of 80% Indonesian crew. We advocate for fair wages, professional development, and ensure all crew members are covered by national social security programs, including BPJS Kesehatan (health) and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (workforce).

Supporting Local Economies

We actively encourage our partner chefs to source fresh produce, fish, and supplies from local markets in their ports of call. This injects tourism revenue directly into the local economy, supporting farmers and fishermen in places like Flores, the Banda Islands, and West Papua.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

The phinisi itself is a living piece of cultural heritage. By creating a viable, high-end market for these vessels, we help support the continuation of the UNESCO-recognized boat-building traditions of the Konjo people in Tana Beru, South Sulawesi. Furthermore, our itineraries often include respectful visits to remote villages, where we facilitate the purchase of traditional crafts, such as Ikat textiles from Sumba or pearl jewelry from Alor, ensuring artisans are paid a fair price.

Community Development Initiatives

Through our parent company, Juara Holding Group, we are developing a community fund to support small-scale projects in the regions we frequent. Our first initiative is focused on providing school supplies and educational materials to a primary school in a village within the Komodo National Park buffer zone.

By choosing Phinisi Broker, our clients are not just booking a holiday; they are becoming patrons of a more sustainable and equitable form of travel in Indonesia.

Empowering local communities: A shared prosperity

Beyond the sapphire embrace of Indonesia’s archipelago, our commitment to sustainability extends to the very heart of its vibrant communities and the conscious operations aboard every magnificent phinisi. We understand that true sustainability intertwines environmental stewardship with social equity, ensuring that the benefits of luxury tourism are shared broadly. Phinisi Broker actively fosters direct economic opportunities for local Indonesians, believing that empowering residents leads to stronger, more resilient communities and a deeper connection to the land and sea they call home. Over 80% of our crew members across partner vessels are proud Indonesians, many hailing from coastal villages, bringing invaluable local knowledge and a profound passion for their homeland to every journey.

Our approach goes beyond employment; it encompasses fair wages, robust training programs, and opportunities for professional growth within the luxury tourism sector. This commitment to local talent not only provides stable livelihoods but also cultivates a sense of pride and ownership in the conservation efforts we champion. Furthermore, Phinisi Broker prioritizes ethical sourcing, seeking out local provisions, traditional crafts, and services from small businesses in the regions we explore. This includes everything from fresh, seasonal produce purchased directly from island markets to beautifully handcrafted textiles and souvenirs, ensuring that tourism dollars directly support local artisans and entrepreneurs, enriching the authentic cultural experience for our guests while bolstering regional economies.

We deeply respect and celebrate Indonesia’s rich cultural tapestry, which is inextricably linked to its natural beauty. Our journeys are designed to facilitate meaningful cultural exchanges, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation. We collaborate with local guides and communities to ensure that visits to villages and cultural sites are conducted respectfully, preserving traditions rather than commodifying them. This dedication extends to supporting the very heritage of the phinisi itself; recognizing the extraordinary craftsmanship involved in these traditional wooden vessels, dating back centuries, we acknowledge the importance of sustaining the skills and knowledge of their builders. The art of Pinisi boatbuilding in South Sulawesi, for instance, is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a testament to the profound cultural value we strive to uphold.

Sustainable practices on board: Curated journeys, conscious choices

The pristine environment that defines an Indonesian phinisi journey demands an equally pristine operational standard. Phinisi Broker is unwavering in its pursuit of sustainable practices on board, meticulously curating partner vessels that demonstrate a genuine commitment to minimizing their ecological footprint. A cornerstone of this commitment is comprehensive waste management. We actively work to eliminate single-use plastics, targeting a 95% reduction across our partner fleet by 2025 through the use of reusable bottles, filtered water systems, and bulk amenities. All organic waste is composted where possible, and non-organic refuse is carefully sorted for recycling or responsibly disposed of in designated facilities, never in the ocean.

Water and energy conservation are paramount. Many partner phinisis are equipped with advanced desalination plants to produce fresh water on board, significantly reducing the need to replenish from shore-based supplies. Guests are encouraged to be mindful of their water consumption, a small but impactful contribution to preserving this vital resource. Energy efficiency is achieved through the use of LED lighting, modern, fuel-efficient engines, and the increasing integration of solar panels where feasible, particularly for auxiliary power. These measures not only reduce emissions but also ensure a quieter, more serene experience for our guests, allowing the natural symphony of the ocean to take center stage.

Our journeys through marine protected areas and vibrant coral reefs are guided by a profound respect for the delicate ecosystems encountered. Phinisi Broker adheres to and promotes strict guidelines for responsible marine and wildlife interaction. This means maintaining a minimum distance of 100 meters from marine wildlife, never touching or feeding animals, and always respecting local regulations governing national parks and conservation zones such as Komodo National Park. Before each excursion, guests receive thorough briefings on ethical wildlife viewing and responsible snorkeling/diving practices, ensuring that every encounter is a privilege enjoyed without detrimental impact. Our goal is to leave no trace, allowing future generations to marvel at Indonesia’s unparalleled biodiversity.

Furthermore, our dedication to sustainability extends to the galley, where culinary excellence meets environmental responsibility. We champion sustainable provisioning, sourcing fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients whenever possible. This includes working with local fishermen who practice sustainable methods and supporting organic farms where available. By minimizing our supply chain and selecting ethically produced goods, we reduce our carbon footprint and support responsible agriculture and fisheries. Food waste is also meticulously managed, with careful portion control and creative repurposing of ingredients, ensuring that the exquisite dining experience on a phinisi journey remains both luxurious and deeply conscious of its impact on the planet.
